Most of us who have refereed this kind of fight remember the moment the load tipped over, and it was rarely a crisis. It was a pile. The mail on the counter has three envelopes older than your last visit, and you are not sure which of them are bills. That pile is information, and it is the start of a count, not a verdict.

Signs the household is too big for one person

Look for patterns that have repeated for weeks, not one bad day. Unopened envelopes or notices from offices you did not expect. Appointments that get booked but not kept, or reminders you learn about after the fact. The same question asked on every call, or the same spot in the house that you have to fix on every visit. Supplies running out on a schedule that only you are tracking. Any one of these can happen in any household. Several of them together, for a month or more, means the work has outgrown the arrangement.

Signs the family has not noticed

The sibling who has not asked a single question in months is part of the picture. So is the group text that goes quiet whenever the subject is the house. Write down who answered a question in the last month and who did not. That short list is more useful at a meeting than any feeling you have about it.

What to do with the list

Bring the list to the family conversation without a verdict attached. Say what you saw, when you saw it, and what it cost you in hours or money. Ask each sibling to name one task they will own and one day to check back in, without reopening the old fight. If a change in your mother's mail, bills, or appointments seems sudden or unlike her, ask her doctor for a look rather than deciding the cause at the kitchen table. You are not the family's diagnostic tool.

This is a count of the work, and the count is yours to share. The Start here page walks through how to begin the conversation if you have not had one yet.
